Behind the Blog with Apartment 34

We’re currently trying to beat the Monday blues with this fabulously inspiring Behind the Blog peek at Erin from Apartment 34. I have to admit, I think it’s working. I mean, the woman is built out of brilliance and beauty (both of the inside and out variety). And it’s been such a pleasure to get to learn a little bit more! To see the other fabulous bloggers in this series click here. And don’t miss the rest of Erins San Fransisco loft in our gallery!

SMP: Some words you live by?
Nothing in your home is mute, everything tells a story about you so collect your stories wisely.

SMP: Any guilty pleasures?
Wine and chocolate but I let go of my guilt about both long ago!

SMP: What did you think your dream job was before your dream job found you?
I’ve had a multitude of careers from personal trainer, to event planner to Aide to a US Senator. Thankfully, I think I’ve found a niche that’s going to stick!

SMP: What’s your favorite quote that describes your creative process?
“Style is primarily a matter of instinct” – designer, Bill Blass

SMP: If you had the opportunity to get a message across to a large group of people, what would your message be?
Personal passion is the root of life’s joy so surround yourself with it. From work, to friends to food if you’re only ambivalent about it, it’s not worth investing in!

Quotes_1

SMP: If you could do it all over again, would you change anything?
While there are always experiences in life you’d rather forget, I firmly believe you were meant to experience them for a reason. Find the lessons and try to remember them (these days I tend to have to write them down!)

SMP: What is one piece of advice you would give to a blogger just starting out?
Blog from a place of joy

SMP: What is your favorite item in your home?
Photos by Jose Villa taken during our wedding in Mexico. While we’re not actually in them {they’re detail shots and landscapes} I’m reminded of that special time in our lives every time I look at them.
Quotes_2

SMP: What’s your best tip for balancing work and personal life?
Slow down and unplug. I strive for switching off and logging out of “online life by 10:00 pm everyday. Though I can’t say it happens all the time, we do commit ourselves to at least one unplugged weekend a month. It’s where I remember to read things that are longer than 140 characters and always feel like a more informed and better person for it!

SMP: What was the tipping point in your business that made you feel like your blog was going to thrive?
After a couple of years of dedicated daily posting I realized a community of readers was developing. I was creating relationships with them, as well as other bloggers, that made me realize that maybe someone other than my mom was paying attention!

SMP: What is the hardest lesson in business you’ve ever learned?
Sadly, all too often business is put before friendship. It’s the lesson I keep having to learn over and over and over.

SMP: Stranded on a desert island question… what’s the one cocktail you would take with you?
Hmmm, excellent question. I’d have to go with the Paloma. It includes grapefruit juice and is incredibly refreshing. I suspect one could live off of it for quite some time.

SMP: What color do you think will stand the test of trend time?
Navy and white always feels sophisticated, fresh and chic.

Quotes_3

SMP: One thing every style savvy homeowner should have?
One piece of classic mid-century modern furniture. It mixes in seamlessly with just about every other decor style and adds a sophisticated twist to any space.

SMP: If you could buy yourself a single gift of any cost, what would it be?
I’d have to say a ticket on a trip around the world. My life has been shaped and inspired by world travel since I got my passport at 15. I would feel completely fulfilled I could turn “citizen of the world” into my next full-time job!
